Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that is caused when a person’s immune system sends false signals that tell the skin cells to grow too quickly. New skin cells normally form in weeks, these signals tell them to grow in days, and because of this the body cannot shed the excess skin cells. They pile up on the skins surface causing patches. Psoriasis is not contagious and it cannot be spread by touching someone that has it.

Psoriasis can be hereditary

In the United States, approximately 7.5 million people have psoriasis. People that have it normally have one or more family members with psoriasis. This is because it has to do with a person’s immune system and their genes. There is no particular age that psoriasis will begin, but it is common to show between ages 15 and 30 and then again between ages 50 and 60.
